Tervel Dimov gone, but not forgotten

People
die in Montreal every day. And with a population of 3.6 million people
in the metropolitan area, some of those deaths are bound to be the
result of accidents - the kind that are mentioned as footnotes on the
six o'clock news, or in news briefs in the paper. For a few
moments, maybe, we pause to remember. But really, our collective memory
of the accidents that claim our fellow city-dwellers' lives can fade as
quickly as bloodstains on pavement.Sometimes family, friends and
citizens stop and leave a candle or flowers to mark the spot so we
remember just a little while longer.Family or friends often leave flowers so loved ones' memories live on.

That's
what happened where Tervel Dimov died. One year ago this month, he was
killed a block away from where I live in St-Henri. The 28-year-old was
walking home from work along the train tracks near Courcelles St. Like
a lot of people in the neighbourhood, he was taking a popular shortcut
by cutting diagonally across the tracks.
When an approaching VIA
Rail train signalled for him to move away from the track, he did - but
not far enough. Caught between a dilapidated fence and the fast-moving
train, the solidly built young man was struck with a force that sent
him flying onto the street. The impact killed him.I live in a
community where although you may not know your neighbours' names, you
know them by sight. In the days and weeks after the accident, bouquets
and messages were woven into the rusty metal fence next to where he
died. He was clearly loved and missed. Who was Tervel Dimov? I wondered
if we'd crossed paths in our daily neighbourhood comings and goingsI
found out that Tervel lived a block away from where he died, in a loft
he had recently moved into. He'd been working hard at two jobs to make
rent and save up for a car.Tervel hadn't had an easy start in
life. His parents, Boyko and Vessela, told me their only child had been
separated from them from the age of 9 months to 41/2 years after they
fled an oppressive political regime in Bulgaria."We've always
had to fight for Tervel," Vessela said, adding she thought the lack of
safety by the train tracks was a factor in Tervel's death. At
times, it seems like St. Henri's industrial past coexists uneasily in
what is now a residential area with plenty of families and children.
With so much foot traffic around the tracks, residents and workers in
the area also worry about safety.A few weeks ago, Tervel's
parents gathered with a small group of friends and family for a
memorial service to mark the one-year anniversary of Tervel's death. In
a traditional Slavic ceremony, they each took a piece of homemade bread
adorned with a candle, ate it with wine, and remembered. And in
St. Henri, where the rusty fence by the train tracks shows no sign
anymore of his makeshift memorial, Tervel's death is not forgotten
either.
